The 31 July payment on account explained: who has to pay, why the first year doubles up, how to reduce it safely if income has dropped, and what MTD does not change.

Every July, thousands of self-employed people get an unpleasant surprise: HMRC wants money in the middle of summer, months before any tax return is due. It is called a payment on account, the deadline is 31 July, and if you were not expecting it, here is exactly how it works and what you can do about it.

What payments on account are

If your last Self Assessment bill was over £1,000 and less than 80% of your tax was collected at source, HMRC makes you pay next year’s tax in advance, in two instalments. Each is half of last year’s income tax and Class 4 National Insurance bill. The first is due 31 January, alongside any balance for the year just filed. The second is due 31 July.

The first-year shock

The system is hardest the first time you cross the threshold. Say your first bill is £4,000. On 31 January you pay that £4,000 plus £2,000 as the first payment on account: £6,000 at once. Then another £2,000 on 31 July. You have paid £8,000 against a £4,000 bill, and the extra £4,000 simply sits as credit against the next year. Nobody warns people about this, and it sinks cash flow plans every year.

If your income has dropped, you can reduce them

Payments on account are based on last year, so if this year is going worse, you can apply to reduce them, online through your tax account or via form SA303. Be careful: if you reduce them below what your final bill turns out to be, HMRC charges daily interest on the shortfall, backdated. Reduce with evidence, not optimism. This is exactly the kind of call your accountant should be making with you in June, not discovering in January.

Three things worth knowing

First, filing your return early does not move the 31 July date, but it can shrink the payment: if your actual bill is lower than last year’s, filing before July recalculates the instalment. Second, payments on account do not cover capital gains or student loan repayments, so those can still produce a January balance. Third, the new Making Tax Digital quarterly updates do not replace payments on account: the quarterly submissions are information, the July payment is cash.

Before 31 July

Check your HMRC account for the exact amount due, pay by the 31st to avoid interest, and if this year’s income is genuinely down, get the reduction claim in first. All the year’s dates in one place: our UK tax deadlines page, with a free printable rates card.

If your July payment caught you off guard, that is a planning failure, not a personal one. We include Self Assessment and year-round planning in every package, from £115 a month, or a standalone return at £349 fixed. Get your fee in 60 seconds or book a free consultation.

Honest 2026 numbers: what UK accountants charge for Self Assessment, limited companies, bookkeeping and payroll, what should be included as standard, and how to avoid surprise bills.

It is the first question everyone asks and the one most accountants dodge: what is this actually going to cost? The honest answer is that UK accounting fees vary enormously, and most of the variation has nothing to do with quality. Here are the real numbers for 2026, what should be included, and the pricing games to watch out for.

Typical UK accounting fees in 2026

Across the UK market, a straightforward Self Assessment return typically costs £150 to £400. Limited company accounts with the corporation tax return usually run £600 to £2,500 a year depending on size and how tidy the records are. Monthly packages for a small limited company sit anywhere between £60 and £250 or more. Bookkeeping is commonly £25 to £35 an hour, payroll a few pounds per payslip, and VAT returns £100 to £300 a quarter when charged separately. One-off tax advice sessions range from £150 to £500.

Hourly rates versus fixed fees

Hourly billing means you pay for slowness and you find out the price after the work is done. Fixed monthly fees mean you know the cost before you commit, the accountant carries the risk of a job taking longer, and you can actually pick up the phone without wondering what the call costs. For almost every small business, fixed wins.

What actually drives the price

Four things move the number more than anything else: turnover, people on payroll, whether you are VAT registered, and the state of your records. A carrier bag of receipts in January attracts what the trade quietly calls the shoebox premium. Industry matters too: construction under CIS, property portfolios and crypto trading all add genuine complexity. What should not move the number is drip pricing, where a headline fee grows £30 here and £50 there for things any business obviously needs.

What should be included, as standard

Before comparing two quotes, check both include the same things: annual accounts and the corporation tax return, your personal Self Assessment, payroll, VAT returns, bookkeeping, software, HMRC agent status so letters go to the accountant instead of you, and the ability to ask questions through the year without a meter running. A cheap quote that excludes half of this list is not cheap.

Our prices, in the open

We publish ours. Packages start from £115 a month with everything above included, and a simple standalone Self Assessment is £349 fixed. Rather than reading a price list, answer five questions in our instant quote tool and see your own number in about 60 seconds. No email address required.

The better question: what does a good accountant save you?

Fees are only half the equation. Getting the salary and dividend mix right, claiming everything you are entitled to, and planning before year end rather than reporting after it routinely saves more than the annual fee. An accountant who only files what you hand them is a cost. One who plans with you is an investment.

Already with an accountant and paying more for less? Switching takes one email and we handle the rest. Or book a free consultation and get your exact fee in writing the same week.

Sold or swapped crypto? How UK capital gains tax works for 2026/27: the £3,000 allowance, 18% and 24% rates, losses, and why HMRC already has your exchange data.

Sold some Bitcoin? Swapped one token for another? Spent crypto on a purchase? Each of those is a disposal for UK capital gains tax, and 2026/27 is the worst possible year to guess your way through it, because HMRC now receives your exchange data automatically. Here is what you will actually pay, and how to pay less of it legally.

What counts as a taxable disposal

Selling crypto for pounds is the obvious one, but swapping one coin for another, spending crypto, and gifting it to anyone other than your spouse or civil partner are all disposals too. Simply buying and holding triggers nothing. Transfers between your own wallets trigger nothing either.

The rates for 2026/27

Your first £3,000 of total gains in the year is covered by the annual exempt amount. Above that, gains are taxed at 18% where they fall within your unused basic rate band and 24% above it. Your other income, salary or self-employment for example, fills the band first, so a higher earner pays 24% on the lot.

Losses are worth money, register them

Losses on crypto offset gains in the same year, and anything left over carries forward indefinitely, but only if you claim them with HMRC, normally within four years. A bad year properly registered can shelter a good year later. Most people never do this, and it costs them real money.

HMRC already knows

Since 1 January 2026, UK crypto platforms collect and report user details and transaction data to HMRC under the Cryptoasset Reporting Framework, and overseas exchanges in participating countries do the same. The days of crypto flying under the radar are over. If you have undeclared gains from earlier years, a voluntary disclosure is dramatically cheaper than a letter from HMRC.

Estimate your bill in seconds

Our free crypto and shares CGT calculator applies the £3,000 allowance, your income, and both rates to show your estimated bill for 2026/27, including what your losses are worth.

Mind that the calculation of the gain itself, with pooling rules, the 30-day rule, and hundreds of transactions across wallets, is where it gets hard. That is exactly what our crypto and stock trader service handles, in English, Romanian or Spanish. The consultation is free.

Director salary and dividends: the optimal mix for 2026/27

What is the most tax-efficient director salary for 2026/27? Why £12,570 still wins for most directors, how dividends are taxed, and the £100,000 trap. Free calculator included.

If you run your own limited company, how you pay yourself is one of the few tax decisions entirely within your control. Get the salary and dividend mix right and you keep thousands more each year. Get it wrong and you hand the difference to HMRC without noticing. Here is how the numbers work for 2026/27.

Why salary first, then dividends

Salary is a deductible expense for your company, so it reduces corporation tax at 19% to 25%. But it attracts National Insurance: your company pays 15% employer NI on salary above £5,000, and you pay 8% employee NI on anything above £12,570. Dividends carry no National Insurance at all, but they are paid from profits that have already suffered corporation tax. The optimal strategy for most directors is a small salary up to a key threshold, with the rest taken as dividends.

The sweet spot: £12,570 for most directors

A salary of £12,570 uses your full personal allowance, so it carries no income tax and no employee NI. Your company does pay employer NI of roughly £1,135 on the slice above £5,000, but the salary and the employer NI are both deductible for corporation tax, and that saving normally outweighs the NI cost. Crucially, a salary at this level also protects your state pension record for the year.

If your company employs more than just you, the Employment Allowance can wipe out up to £10,500 of employer NI, which makes the £12,570 salary a clear winner. Companies where the sole director is the only person on the payroll cannot claim it, but £12,570 still usually comes out ahead once corporation tax relief is counted.

How your dividends are taxed in 2026/27

The first £500 of dividends is tax free. After that, dividends falling in the basic rate band are taxed at 10.75%, the higher rate band at 35.75%, and the additional rate at 39.35%. Compared with salary at the same level, dividends in the basic rate band remain markedly cheaper once National Insurance is factored in.

Watch the £100,000 trap

Once your total income passes £100,000, your personal allowance is withdrawn at £1 for every £2 of income above the line. The effective tax rate on income between £100,000 and £125,140 climbs to roughly 60%. If your profits allow it, holding total income just under £100,000 and leaving the rest in the company, or making a pension contribution, is often worth thousands.

Run your own numbers in seconds

Our free director take-home calculator shows exactly what a given salary and dividend mix leaves in your pocket for 2026/27, including the 60% trap warning. It uses the same rates we use for clients.

The right answer also depends on student loans, other income, and whether pension contributions would serve you better than dividends. That is where proper tax planning earns its keep. Book a free consultation and we will map the optimal mix for your exact situation, or get an instant fixed fee with our quote tool.

Self-employed: simple y muchas veces suficiente
